My favorite Gregism -- the GFP rule. As usual, so very true and so very overlooked. Do what you do REALLY well and don't try to be everything to everyone. If you do that, the chips will fall right into place.

Chris - there are so many people saying this, I guess it sound too obvious to some people. Pat Sullivan, the creator of ACT! and founder of SalesLogix, has been saying for 20+ years that "great software is created by fanatics." Derek Neighbors, one of the founders of Gangplank said it a different way in a recent blog post - http://derekneighbors.com/2010/06/the-best-way-to-combat-bad-press-is-excellence/.

Steve Jobs is the ultimate GFP guru. The stock market value of Apple is 10 times the value of Dell today. Almost all products that are getting press and fans are GFP examples.

As a fellow marketer, you see this often enough too. One of the biggest things marketers can help entrepreneurs do is focus and help deliver the FGP. It takes more discipline than many inventors think is necessary.

Thanks for your comment!

I love your enthusiasm on this topic, Greg. More people need to have that passion with their own products. The main point you raise about focusing on a target with a specific need or pain is a golden rule for product design, development and management. Thanks! Doug Bruhnke

Love this post. I don't get why this isn't completely obvious yet. I so believe this is the key to success. All of our current focus is to remake ourselves, our services, our product into something great. Putting on the big show doesn't work anymore. People talk too much and there are too many mechanisms that amplify voices. Good wins. If your product isn't great, it's just a matter of time.

I love the Hugh MacLeod print that speaks to this: http://www.gapingvoidgallery.com/product_info.php?products_id=54
