Well written article on using a CMS to build a website. The past few months I've been playing around with various types including Joomla, Drupal and WordPress. While my site was built using Drupal, WordPress seems much easier to use (and install) and works for 90% of sites out there. From what I've heard, Drupal can be used to make incredibly complex sites and even works for e-commerce. Plus there seem to be much more developers focused on WordPress, making it easier to get a custom template.

Thanks for your questions.

I estimate I spent about 20 hours setting up and learning to use Joomla and the plug-in extensions. We had about 100 pages on our site and we will probably add another 50 in the next year, so it paid off quickly for the size of site at the school.

If you have just 5 pages that probably won't change often, you should probably build the site using HTML pages and no CMS. You might not even spend 10 hours on the site in total, so it doesn't make sense to invest time in more powerful CMS tool. There are plenty of HTML template sets available. The more pages and more changes you will make, the more a CMS makes sense.

You do need to know more HTML to manage a whole site using just HTML pages. A CMS allows you to edit page content, so can choose to edit using basic HTML tags - bold, italic, bulleted lists, images, links and paragraphs. I don't know much more HTML than that and I built the whole site.

Great looking stuff. I do have a few questions:

1. How much time did you invest in setting up and learning to use Joomla?

2. Since most small business websites are 5 to 6 pages total, what would you recommend to use?

3. Most Web creation software requires HTML knowledge, are there alternatives to learning HTML?

I REALLY like this website and I think it compares very favorably to other sites that cost much more. This is also a great outline for how others can accomplish the same thing. I am forwarding this to bunch of friends and family who are currently trying to accomplish the same thing. I think it will save them a lot of pain, heartache and money!
